three new websites for Research Councils UK

RCUK initial web design

to the point has been appointed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to work with Research Councils UK to design websites for three research programmes.

The RCUK is a partnership of the UK’s seven research councils, which last year invested £2.8bn into academic research. Appointed in September on the strength of former work with the EPSRC, (see full press release for Impact World here) the consultancy was given separate briefs for each programme, but encouraged to create ‘a consistency of messaging across each brand’, says Simon Hutton, managing director of to the point. Work is under way on three sites, to give ‘Digital economy’, ‘Energy’ and ‘Nano science’ research their own Web presence.

Due to the large amount of information on the site, navigation will be made simple, through drop-down menus, offering increasing levels of depth and complexity ‘to appeal to different stakeholders’, says Hutton. Should the websites be well received, there is ‘a possibility’ that the websites of other RCUK programmes will take on the same look, feel and consistency of messaging, ‘providing the RCUK can see a benefit’, says Hutton.

All three sites will be completed this year. To support this work, to the point have also developed branding for a suite of literature for EPSRC and RCUK (printed and digital) for what they call ‘high level positioning statements’. These go out to their key stakeholders (eg. Government, Research establishments, Researchers etc).
