The background
In 2025, the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction called for stronger risk communication, recognising its essential role in early warning systems and disaster response. However, there is currently limited support, information, and training available for people working in risk communication, and no single forum where they can come together to share ideas and challenges, understand best practices, and develop new tools and techniques. For these reasons, the GRCN was formed.
GRCN’s mission
The mission of the Network is to bring together and support experts and practitioners from all sectors and disciplines to improve global risk communication and create a safer, healthier, more resilient world. The network has four main aims:
Connecting
To create a diverse and inclusive platform that brings together researchers, experts, and practitioners working in risk communication.
Education & Training
To develop, support, and deliver education and training for a wide range of people involved in risk communication.
Advocacy
To provide leadership for the global risk communication community, promoting and championing the field.
Evidence & Standards
To strengthen the evidence base, establish shared standards for effective risk communication, and develop, curate, and translate research into practical guidance.
The identity and what it needed to reflect
The key goals and objectives the identity needed to convey were:
Building an initial platform for networking
Promoting and energising the network through posts and social media to grow membership
Bringing together experts and practitioners from across the field
Our concepts
We explored various creative routes based on the themes of networking, connectivity, risk, and innovation, while also aiming to create a sense of drama and energy. Some of our early explorations can be seen here, and as you’ll notice, they each express quite different personalities.
The chosen route
The final choice came down to a mark that reflected all of these qualities. It successfully balanced dynamism and energy with a sense of authority and gravitas.
David Reid had this to say about the project
“We are really grateful that tothepoint created an identity that reflects global collaboration, inclusivity, and risk. Hopefully, this will help us engage with different audiences all around the world and make them feel part of a vibrant, supportive, and innovative network.”
