BBSRC Innovator of the Year awards 2018

We have been working with BBSRC on their ‘Innovator of the Year’ awards since creating their original fostering innovation campaign brand back in 2013. This government-funded initiative was created to recognise and reward individuals and small teams who have harnessed the potential of their excellent research.

This year’s event took place at the Mermaid’s Upper River Room overlooking the Thames and celebrated ten years of the competition. There was a desire to mark this occasion with a timeline that highlighted the successes and subsequent work of past winners, their achievements since and how this has benefited the UK society and economy.

The simple, distinctive ‘10’ graphic icon we created allowed us to communicate the various aspects of the 2018 finalists’ research in a very simplistic iconic form from neuroscience to stem cell research, geonutrition to fungicides.

The bright colour palette was taken from the BBSRC guidelines and embraced by the design team. It helped them achieve bold graphics that brought a playful look and desire to explore the event, enhancing the serious subject matter of the occasion.

Key deliverables we created were the entrance welcome graphics, a ten year timeline of achievements, pillar graphics that promoted individual finalists and auditorium graphics that highlighted the brand.

The overall impact when these elements were combined was a clean, modern space where the graphics brought a contemporary look and feel to the occasion. BBSRC had this to say:

As always, tothepoint were full of brilliant ideas on how to transform the venue and get our messages across. We loved the use of bright, bold colours to catch people’s eye in the large white space, and we had great comments on the venue’s appearance from guests at the ceremony. We have worked with tothepoint from the start of the competition, but we feel that in many ways this has been the most visually-pleasing event yet.
