The Business Design Sprint Toolkit

The Satellite Applications Catapult is an independent innovation and technology company, created to foster growth across the economy through the exploitation of space. They help organisations make use of and benefit from satellite technologies and bring together multi-disciplinary teams to generate ideas and solutions in an open innovation environment.

In order to facilitate the process of working in partnership with organisations who potentially have a new concept or idea they want to bring to market, they have created ‘The Business Design Sprint’ which are a series of sessions that test a product’s robustness. These sessions are held with company founders, directors, or product owners, to help them develop their business ideas into more robust and validated business propositions. This is often done as a precursor to growth, whether it is launching new services, building new partnerships, or preparing for a round of investment.

We were approached to create a brand concept and suite of tools, using lean-start-up methodology, which could be used at the sessions to help individuals explore various paths, make key decisions, identify core values and assess business models. It was important that these materials felt different from traditional workshop materials and had a sense of fun and playfulness as a means of engaging with people in the sessions. The design and colour palette reflected the energy and exchange of ideas generated at brainstorming workshops, the primary colours indicative of highlighter colours.

The materials also needed to clearly convey the four key stages of the products life-cycle which were identified as Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver. We created an icon for each which were used extensively throughout the materials and helped signpost the stages.

We created ‘The Business Design Sprint Toolkit’, a physical pack which comprised of:

  1. An A4 Introduction Guide explaining the purpose of the sessions and what should be achieved by their outcome.
  2. A3 Canvas sheets which were filled in as part of the sessions and gathered opinions, ideas and information about the product in an interactive format.
  3. A6 Method Cards, a series of playful cards distributed amongst the group which ask questions of the product as a means of testing its robustness.

These packs are now being used by Satellite Applications Catapult as part of their business support programme.

What our client has to say

We approached tothepoint with an idea of creating a toolkit to make our processes more accessible to a wider audience, but without knowing the form it would take.  Through discussion and development, they helped us explore a number of different well thought out ways we could present our methodology and materials.  They were dedicated, attentive and were genuinely passionate about the project.  It didn’t feel like they were just creating something for us, it felt like we were creating something together.
