October Round Up

The EU Data Protection Regulation is looming

Do you send mailouts to your customers? Most people probably aren’t aware, but new changes to the law are looming on how businesses manage their customer data.

Over the past 10 – 15 years, businesses have had to become increasingly aware of how they gather data for contacting people ‘en masse’. Most people know that an ‘unsubscribe’ link must be offered at the bottom of email newsletters. It is also standard practice when offering an option for email sign up, to have an ‘opt in’ choice rather than an ‘opt out’. These are all strongly recommended practices, but so far are not enforced by law. That’s about to change.

In May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation will come into force. In a nutshell, businesses will have to have solid evidence that individuals in their lists have actively agreed to be on those lists. If not, you could be fined.

The RNLI is one to watch as they are the first major UK charity to address this issue early. They are obviously concerned about how this could affect their fundraising but a proactive market leading approach is a good start. More on their approach here

So over the coming months, we will be asking all our contacts to confirm that they’d like to continue receiving these newsletters. But you should also be asking yourself how this new law will affect your business. Is email going to continue to be the best way to contact customers and get new business, or should you be focussing on the alternatives?

…hopefully you will continue to watch this space.

Out of the box!

So after all the hype our MD Simon decided to see what all the fuss was about and experience the launch of Boxpark Croydon on Sunday. With live music, DJs and a varied mix of street food and drink this new scheme next to East Croydon station was buzzing with energy and people. Another big step in the shape of things to come for Croydon and a team trip will now be on the cards in the not too distant future… roll on Westfield!

Scary Bake Off

Our neighbours in 5 Maidstone Buildings Mews, the usually friendly antipodeans from education recruitment agency ANZUK, decided to run a Halloween themed Bake Off competition and fund raising for a family from one of ANZUK’s schools who recently lost their home in a fire. Luckily both parents and two children were unharmed, however they lost everything. It was a fun 30 minute escape from the studio for a good cause and they certainly bake a good cake but we were undecided which was the scariest costume!

Wine in the sky

Earlier this month Simon and Will had the chance to attend another Witness Mountain Wine (WMW) tasting, this time in one of London’s most iconic buildings: The Shard. With our graphics proudly on display the great Hungarian wine flowed. Aside from us there were some big wigs there including a journalist from ITV’s Wine show who showed particular interest in the Zsirai Winery and the two sisters Petra and Kata who run it. Big thanks to Eva Cartwright of WMW for inviting us and for what it’s worth, our favourite was the Zsirai Harslevelu, closely followed by 2HA’s Courage. To watch the video of the tasting see here.

Offishally out of this world

This month our account manager Diana decided to scale new heights and explore the latest intriguing exhibition at Tate Modern: Philippe Parreno’s Anywhen. Set to challenge perspective and time, the exhibition appeared to combine random objects you wouldn’t normally expect to find in a museum: inflatable fish, moving panels and strange sounds. After posing like a proper tourist-visitor-fish-fanatic (pictures don’t lie!), Diana heard from Vassals Oikonomopoulos, the show’s curator, on how the exhibition is actually partially controlled by a yeast culture in combination with some super software. And if you don’t believe us (please do, that picture says everything) you can check out the exhibition until April 2017!
