Schmidt Science Fellows: Interdisciplinary Science Summit identity

The Schmidt Science Fellows Interdisciplinary Science Summit 2025 in Pasadena, showcasing bold interdisciplinary research to break barriers, accelerate impact, and tackle society’s greatest challenges.

The brief

Schmidt Science Fellows approached us to create a campaign and event brand for their flagship Interdisciplinary Science Summit in Pasadena. The annual summit brings together Fellows, partners, and the wider scientific community to accelerate interdisciplinary collaboration and showcase bold approaches to tackling society’s biggest challenges. The brand needed to elevate SSF’s visibility, reflect its mission to “change how science is done,” and flex across multiple years and host institutions.

The creative idea

We developed a logo and identity system that visually embodies interdisciplinary science: three coloured bars intersect fluidly to represent collaboration and directional change. The identity was designed as a dual structure, one side consistent to build long-term recognition of “Interdisciplinary Science,” the other adaptable to each year’s location partner. For Pasadena 2025, a rose icon referenced the city’s famous Tournament of Roses. A modular grid system supported both static and animated applications, adapting to different media and event moods, professional and structured for daytime sessions, more fluid and expressive for evening showcases. Using Cavalry’s procedural animation tools, we extended the identity into dynamic motion graphics, ensuring consistency across screens, banners, and video.

The logo is a visual representation of interdisciplinary science. Three coloured bars represent different disciplines, intersecting fluidly to convey integration and directional change. The typography reinforces this idea, flowing into itself, symbolising cross-fertilisation and collaboration.

Our scalable grid system provided flexibility across every medium: from widescreen formats (1920×1080) for presentations to portrait layouts for pull-up banners and digital totems. The design allowed for fluid, linear motion graphics based on bold colour blocks or image-driven, pixel-based layouts.

Event films went beyond simple documentation. By weaving in consistent visual elements, we extended the brand experience, turning talks into part of the Summit’s story, reinforcing its professional image, and leaving a memorable impression.
