The EDIS symposium exhibition, celebrating and learning about diversity and inclusion in STEM!

After a four-year delay, due to COVID and the Pandemic, the EDIS Symposium was back at The Francis Crick Institute and we were asked to brand and deliver the materials to bring the space to life for this important one day event that was being held during National Inclusion Week. The symposium is the perfect vehicle and opportunity for researchers and professionals at all career stages, who are interested in exploring what inclusive leadership can be, to meet and network.

The Symposium aims to challenge and expand ideas of what leadership can be, featuring discussions on topics such as grassroots community organising in STEM, the role of funders in supporting research careers and leading in equitable research practices.

A brand that reflects the core subjects of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion in Science and Health (EDIS)

We have worked for EDIS (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Science and Health) since its inception in 2018 when we created its brand.

The organisation founded by The Francis Crick Institute, Wellcome and GlaxoSmithKline was set up to address and remove obstacles presented in research, and personal and professional development for minority groups within the science and health research sector.

Creating materials that work within the confines of The Francis Crick space

EDIS asked us to help plan the space and create graphics that promoted the brand within the confines of The Crick space, creating materials that engage with the audience and communicate key questions and information about the issues that would be discussed.

As they are a non-profit organisation, it was important that we provided cost-effective, flexible solutions that could be reused at other venues. We used existing Crick mobile panels, that could be moved around the space, and re-skinned them with our graphics, promoting four key questions that attendees were encouraged to respond to by the use of post-it notes, stuck to each of the boards.

We created an on-line programme for the event which was also printed digitally so that a short run of copies were available at the event for those that still prefer this medium.

A simple call-to-action graphic, comprising of low tac removable cut vinyl, was a cost-effective way of using existing Crick structures to draw the eye and encourage interaction.

Robin Craig, Communications and Administration Officer at EDIS had this to say

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Tothepoint on the EDIS Symposium. The team were consistently energised and passionate about the project, and the design elements they delivered were fantastic. They understood that EDIS centres accessibility and joy, and found creative ways to include that in the design work. I’m looking forward to working with them more in the future.
